Licensed Professional Counselor Intern (Supervised by Paul Myers)
Adam Stocking
I am a Marriage and Family Therapy student at Amberton University, with training in couples and sex therapy, currently completing my practicum at Intentional Counseling. I have been married for 19 years and have two children—and two cats to round out the family. While I have spent the past 13 years working in IT security, a consistent thread throughout my life has been a desire to help people who are struggling.
As an MFT counselor utilizing Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), I work with couples who find themselves stuck in recurring negative cycles. Together, we identify these patterns, explore the underlying attachement dynamics, and build toward more secure, connected relationships. When couples learn to recognize and interrupt these cycles, they are better equipped to strengthen their bond and create a ripple effect of healthy connection within their family.
My goal is to help couples develop realistic, meaningful relationship goals both in their day-today relationship as well as in their sexual connection, in a space that supports honest, deep, and sometimes difficult conversations. I strive to create an environment that is safe, nurturing, and nonjudgmental. When couples are willing to engage in the work, I remain a consistent advocate for the health and restoration of their relationship.
My Christian faith is an important part of my life and I am committed to creating a space where all couples of any background, beliefs, or faith traditions feel welcomed and respected. I seek to meet each couple with care, humility, empathy, and curiosity, honoring their unique story and experiences.

How would you describe your approach to counseling?
More than the content of arguments that clients may be having in their everyday lives, I look more at the underlying causes of the repeating patterns—the root cause. I collaborate with couples to identify the attachment needs that are not being met that cause most of the cyclical, harmful interactions to formulate methods of repair so the couples can begin seeing the start of a harmful cycle and stop it in its tracks.

What's one thing you wish more people understood about therapy?
Therapy is not as unhinged as media may portray, such as in “Shrinking.” Therapy also does not mean that someone is weak, broken, or frail. On the contrary, humans experience a range of emotions, situations, and challenges that we were not meant to face on our own. Therapy offers people in any stage of life a method and process to unpack their inner worlds with trusted allies who support, encourage, and even challenge limiting beliefs that are holding them back from becoming the people they are meant to be.

What do you enjoy most about being a therapist?
I enjoy being invited into a person(s) story. Whether we realize it fully, we all are living out our own stories with different plots, characters, tragedies, and joys. Situations may exhibity similarities from client to client, but the method in which they arrived in that space is unique to them. To be invited into and trusted to hold space for that uniqueness and be a healthy and healing part of their story is something I do not take for granted.

What are some of your hobbies or interests outside of work?
When I’m not working, I enjoy reading (mostly non-fiction, with a few fiction books sprinkled here and there), walking outside, and playing board/card games with my family. I enjoy live music and watching cooking shows with my kids. One of the more recent hobbies I have taken up is LEGO. My family is a brick family from building sets to watching the shows and my son even entered a build into the local brick convention! My own latest builds are the Lord of the Rings Rivendell set, the Neuschwanstein Castle, and Batman Arkham Asylum. We love all things brick!

Who would benefit most from working with you?
While I work with individuals and families, couples and engaged/pre-marital couples would benefit the most. Having training in Emotionally Focused Therapy, Sex Therapy ad being Gottman Level II Certified and Prepare/Enrich Certified, I am equipped with the tools to assist couples in removing the stumbling blocks that trip up so many in their day-to-day lives.

What types of therapy do you offer (individual, couples, family, trauma-focused, etc.)?
I offer individual (18 and older), couples, and family therapy. I am trained in EFT (Emotionally Focused Therapy) and Sex Therapy. In my training, I have found EFT to be highly effective in addressing the issues that plague most relationships with individuals, couples, and families. It identifies negative cycles that occur within relationships—regardless of argument subject matter, identifies the primary attachment styles of the couple and their previous attachment relationships (parents, friends, past partners), and allow space to restructure the interactions through deepening emotional engagement.
